What is BPM?
BPM stands for Beats Per Minute — the tempo of a piece of music. A song at 120 BPM plays two beats every second. Most pop, hip-hop, and dance music sits between 90 and 160 BPM: house tracks typically run 120–128, trap around 140, drum & bass around 174, and ballads often sit in the 60–80 range.
Tempo is different from time signature. A 4/4 track at 120 BPM and a 3/4 waltz at 120 BPM both have 120 beats per minute — the meter changes how beats group into bars, not the beat rate itself.
Why detect BPM?
DJs use BPM to decide which tracks can be mixed together — two songs within roughly ±4% tempo can be beatmatched. Producers sample loops and need the source tempo to time-stretch them into a project.
