What BPM actually measures

It is not the same thing as time signature: a 4/4 dance track and a 3/4 waltz can both sit at exactly 120 BPM, because meter describes how beats group into bars, not how fast the beats arrive.

Verifying a result you're not sure about
Tempo detection can legitimately land on double or half the true value, because a halftime groove can be counted either way — both are valid metrical readings. Here's how to sanity-check:
- Listen for the backbeat. In most pop, rock, and dance music, the snare hits on beats 2 and 4. Count "1-2-3-4" with the kick on 1; if the snare lands on 1 and 3, your tool may be reporting double tempo.
- Compare against genre norms. A "trap" track at 70 BPM is really at 140; a "drum & bass" track at 87 is really at 174. Halftime is idiomatic in both genres.
