"What key is this song in?" is one of the most common music questions on the internet — asked by DJs planning harmonic mixes, musicians learning songs, karaoke singers picking comfortable tracks, and producers sampling material. The answer takes two seconds with the right tool or ten minutes with trained ears. This guide covers both, and explains why sometimes the honest answer is "it's complicated."

What a musical key is (30-second version)
A key is a song's tonal center: the note and scale its melody and harmony revolve around, and the note that feels like "home" when the music stops. A track in C major is built from the C major scale and resolves to C. Major keys tend to sound bright, minor keys darker — though arrangement and rhythm shape that impression as much as the key does.
Two facts that trip people up:
- Key ≠ tempo. A song's key describes pitch relationships; BPM describes rhythm. Two tracks in the same key can have completely different grooves, and DJs mix them harmonically regardless of tempo (that's what pitch-lock is for). - Songs change keys. Modulation — moving to a new key mid-song — is common in pop choruses and bridges, and standard in jazz. A detector reports the most prominent key, which is usually what you want, but it's one number describing a whole journey.

Method 2: How to tell what key a song is in by ear
You can find a key yourself in about a minute, and it's worth learning even if you use tools:
- Find "home." Sing or hum the note that feels most final — often the last note of the chorus or the root of the closing chord. Find that note on a keyboard or tuner app.
- Major or minor? Play the major and minor triads built on that note. The one that sounds "right" against the song tells you the mode.
- Sanity-check with the bassline. The lowest sustained note at rest points (especially the final chord) is usually the tonic.
This is genuinely learnable — it's pattern recognition, not magic — and it's also the best way to verify a detector on a track that matters. Ten minutes of practice per day for a couple of weeks and "what key is this?" stops being a search query.
Is the song major or minor?
Once you've found the home note, the second half of the question is its flavor — and "how to tell if a song is major or minor" has its own reliable tests:
- The third test (most reliable). Play the note three semitones above your home note, then the one four semitones above. The interval that "belongs" to the song's sound is the third: four semitones (a major third) means major, three (a minor third) means minor.
- The chorus chord. Listen to the chord under the last word of the chorus. Is it open and settled (major) or tense and melancholy (minor)? Endings expose the mode because that's where songs resolve.
- Brightness heuristics — with a caveat. Major tends to read as happy, minor as sad, but tempo, arrangement, and lyrics override the effect constantly. Minor-key dance tracks feel euphoric; major-key ballads feel devastating. Use brightness as a hint, never a verdict.
One special case worth knowing: a song that feels minor but ends on a major chord (or vice versa) is often in the relative key — C major and A minor contain exactly the same notes. What separates them is which note feels like home, which is why detectors that only look at note content sometimes swap the two. Method 3: Sheet music and tabs
For songs with published notation, the key signature is on the first line. Caveats: the notated key and the sounding key can differ (transposing instruments, capos — a guitar song "in G" with a capo on 2 actually sounds in A), and songs often use more accidentals than the signature implies. Tabs sites crowd-source key labels and are wrong often enough that the notation itself is the only part worth trusting.

Why DJs care so much: the Camelot system
The Camelot wheel labels every key with a number and letter — 8B is C major, 8A is A minor, and so on around the circle of fifths. The mixing rules fall out of the numbering:
- Same code (8B → 8B): same key, always compatible
- ±1 on the number (8B → 7B or 9B): a perfect fifth away, almost always smooth
- A↔B swap, same number (8B → 8A): relative major/minor — shares six of seven notes

And when the key isn't convenient — change it
Here's the step most guides skip. Once you know a song's key, you're not stuck with it:
- A vocalist needs the song three semitones lower? Shift it down with the Pitch Shifter — pitch moves, tempo and duration stay exactly the same.
- A sample's in the wrong key for your project? Transpose it into place by the semitone distance between the keys.
- DJ transition needs one track in the other's key? Transpose rather than fight the mix.
Shifting works in whole semitones, which is exactly the resolution keys come in. Up to ±4 semitones sounds clean on full mixes; beyond ±7, processing artifacts become audible — at that distance, it's usually better to pick a different track.

Why do different key finders disagree on the same song? Three reasons: different analysis windows (one samples the whole track, another weights the loudest sections), relative-key confusion (C major and A minor share every note — only the tonal center differs), and modulating tracks where "the key" is genuinely arguable. Does changing a song's speed change its key? No — a speed changer shifts tempo while pitch stays locked, so the key survives untouched. A pitch shifter does the opposite: key moves, tempo and duration stay the same.
